Another CBP® Research Project Accepted At Clinical Biomechanics

  by Deed E. Harrison, D.C.

In January 2001, we received a letter from Dr. Kim Burton, editor of Clinical Biomechanics, that one of our recent Bioengineering projects on the cervical spine had received final acceptance. The title of this paper is “Comparison of Axial and Flexural Stresses in Lordosis and Three Buckled Modes in the Cervical Spine” by Harrison DE, Harrison DD, Janik TJ, Jones EW, Cailliet R, Normand M. This makes our 3rd paper published/accepted at Clinical Biomechanics. We have a 4th paper in review there at present.

In this project, we calculated the stresses on the cervical vertebral bodies in four configurations: lordosis, kyphosis, and two “S”-curves. I chose these four radiographic types from my clinic files in Elko, Nevada and flew to Huntsville to digitize these x-rays so that our engineers could analyze the data. Besides our usual team of myself, my father, Rene Cailliet, MD, and Tad Janik, PhD, this time we had help from Bill Jones, PhD (Professor in Department of Mechanical Engineering at Mississippi State University) and Martin Normand, PhD, DC (Professor at Biomechanics Lab at University of Quebec at Three Rivers). We concluded that segmental and/or global areas of kyphosis are very undesirable configurations in the cervical spine. After reading this paper, it will be unjustified to claim that cervical kyphosis is a “normal variant.”
