CBP® Non-Profit
Pledges $20,000 To
Fund Drs. Keller/Colloca
At a special session board meeting of CBP® Non-profit, Inc., the Board
of Directors voted unanimously in favor of funding a research grant
proposal submitted by Tony Keller, Ph.D., and Chris Colloca, D.C. The
proposal entitled, A Biomechanical and Neurophysiological Investigation
of Spinal Manipulation on Trunk Muscle Hyperactivity, is an exciting
collaboration with a top-notched international research team to answer
an important question for chiropractic. The study is slated to begin
this fall at Sahlgrenska University Hospital’s Department of Ortho-paedics
in Göteborg, Sweden in conjunction with Dr. Sten Holm and
co-investigators.
Dr. Keller, the Interim Chair in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, and Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics &
Rehabilitation at the University of Vermont has been collaborating with
Dr. Colloca on chiropractic research projects since 1998. During this
time they have produced over 15 publications for peer-reviewed
biomedical journals and international scientific conferences. Dr. Keller
has also won the prestigious Volvo-Award from the International Society
for the Study of the Lumbar Spine in his previous collaborations with
Dr. Holm. CBP® Non-profit President, Dr. Don Harrison stated, “We have
observed Keller and Colloca’s progress as they have been published in
the same top notch Index Medicus journals and conferences as we at CBP®
have in the past four years.
While this research team has done several studies in human subjects, The
research proposal outlines a porcine (pig) model where electrical
stimulation can be applied to the intervertebral disc to excite
nociceptive afferents and reflexogenically cause hyperactive paraspinal
muscles. With this model, different forms of spinal adjustments can be
examined biomechanically for their effectiveness in changing
reflexogenic muscle tone and spinal function. Details of this
investigation are included in this issue in an article by Colloca and
Keller on page 12.
Funded in the past by the National Institute of Chiropractic Research (NICR),
Keller and Colloca were turned away this year after submitting their
grant proposal at the NICR board meeting in January, 2001. Recognizing
the research opportunities, Dr. Harrison offered the assistance of CBP®
Non-profit to raise the necessary funds. “We decided the main priority
was to get Keller and Colloca funded immediately to finish projects that
already they have planned and arranged. Then our board committed to
raising funds to support both their projects and ours each year in the
future, said Dr. Harrison.”
To enable CBP® Non-profit to assist in this important research, now more
than ever, your financial support is needed. It is your tax-deductible
donations that will assist accomplishing these research goals.
Chiropractors are asked to step-up and give back to the profession that
has made them so successful. Those that meet the challenge will receive
special acknowledgement for their generosity.
Your donations of $250, $500, $1000 or more to CBP® Non-profit this year
will secure this ground-breaking chiropractic research.
In July, 2001, the fundraising campaign was kicked off by Dr. Mark
Radermacher (Elroy, WI) giving $5,000, Dr. Scott Heun (Pinole, CA), Dr.
Marc Swerdlick (Naperville, IL), and Dr. Chris Colloca (Phoenix, AZ)
giving $1000 each to CBP® Non-profit.
