Dr. Reid practiced CBP® in Lynnwood, Washington for five years before moving to Japan a little over a year ago. He graduated class salutatorian from Life Chiropractic College - West in 1983, is a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner, and prior to leaving Washington State, was a State Appointed Washington Labor & Industries Consultant. He holds licenses to practice chiropractic in both California and Washington. Dr. Reid is also currently a CBP® Instructor, and of course, our first in Japan.

Japan seems to lag behind America by about fifteen years. If one looks at the state of Chiropractic in America around 1985, they will have a good image of what is popular in Japan currently. This means Motion Palpation, SOT, and Applied Kinesiology, to mention a few, are still in their prime. Of the 15,000 or so chiropractors, only some 50-60 graduated in America. Without regulation or laws regarding Chiropractic, it leaves the field wide open for various therapies and methods of treatment, and thus leaving the neophyte to chiropractic wondering what Chiropractic actually is. Combine this with an educational pipeline from America that is about the same as a 14.4Kps modem, and it leaves the Japanese Chiropractor lacking.

Four years ago when I first arrived here in Japan, I was introduced to the President of the Japan Chiropractic Association, Yasunori Iwama. The JCA is probably the largest chiropractic organization in Japan. About two years ago, Mr. Iwama asked me if I might be interested in writing a book for the chiropractors. This book (Actually one of three to be published) entitled perhaps not so appropriately in English “Chiropractic Manual,” was completed and began sales in mid August of this year.

The book is divided into three sections. The first section discusses subluxation of the spine. Doctors who read the AJCC may remember the article by Deed Harrison, D.C., “The Death and Resurrection of Spinal Subluxation: A CBP® Researcher’s Perspective,” published July 2001. Deed comments on the lack of meaning, as well as validity behind the “Chiropractic Subluxation.” The “PRS” subluxation is akin to a Zombie from the movie “Night of the Living Dead.” Despite no reason for its continued existence, it still animates itself, wandering and searching for a place to go. In the book, I separate subluxation into two types; Type One, and Type Two. Type One amounts to inflammation, and abnormal function of the joint, but is not truly related to displacement of the vertebrae. Type Two is best described as “Global Subluxation.”

The second section of the book is standard diversified examination, and adjusting procedures. The third section of the book is identification, evaluation, and correction of Global Subluxation as described by CBP®.  Separating the book into three sections allows the chiropractor to properly separate in his mind subluxation, and the needed method for correction as well.

I can’t leave off without mentioning what it takes to put together a book like this. First it must be written. This goes without saying, except that when going to gather all the facts, research articles, and permission from other publishers to reprint, and use copies, it was all done from Japan. This alone was a nightmare. Then the book needed to be translated into Japanese. Translating from English to French is simply a task. Translating from English to Japanese is about the same as teaching your dog to “Meow.” After Translation, A Japanese (America Graduated) Chiropractor had to edit the book. Then the publisher had to edit the book for publication. Translation took a total of one of the two years it took to get the book published. In the end, costs for translation will have well exceeded profits from sale of the book.

Mr. Iwama stated clearly from the beginning, the book is not about profits, it is about bringing the chiropractors of Japan up to speed with what is current in America, and parallels the results of research to date with regards to subluxation, and correction of such. With that in mind, I could not have written this book without the help of Don, Deed, and all the others who have put so much time into making CBP® and chiropractic what it truly ought to be, and is becoming. I also should say thanks to Katsuya Taguchi, Shiro Kobayashi, as well as the many Kanbuyakuin (Directors of the JCA) and members of the JCA for the untiring assistance in making the book possible.

Sales are already high. The JCA is about to sponsor the third annual CBP® seminar, and CBP® Doctors are increasing here in Japan.  With the help of this book, perhaps they will increase even faster. By-the-way, when saying “Third annual CBP® seminar,” I should qualify this. Enrolling Chiropractors purchase a table, Cervical adjusting instrument, and then study roughly 48 hours over six days. CBP® levels one through five total 60 hours. We may make only 20 CBP® Doctors a year, but they are 100% CBP®, no “For-License-Renewal” purposes only people show up here.
