Some History of Chiropractic
in Oregon

Michael L. Underhill, DC, DABCT, CCSP,
CCST is a 1981 graduate of Western States Chiropractic College. He is a long
time CBP® practitioner and is certified in Chiropractic BioPhysics®. He is also
certified as a sports chiropractor and certified in spinal trauma. He holds a
diplomate in thermography. Dr. Underhill is a contributing author to the book,
“Motor Vehicle Collision Injuries: Mechanisms, Diagnosis, and Management.” He
has been in private practice in Beaverton, Oregon for the past 23 years and has
served as part time instructor at WSCC teaching both post graduate and
undergraduate classes.
Recently, I was fortunate enough to acquire a photograph of the Pacific
Chiropractic College graduating class of September 1920. At the time, Dr. O.W.
Elliott was the president of the College. The college roots date back to Marsh’s
School and Cure, which was formed in 1904. In 1909 it became known as the
Pacific College of Chiropractic. This college existed until 1913 when it was
renamed Pacific Chiropractic College. There was a merger early on with Oregon
Peerless College of Chiropractic (1911), which was previously D.D. Palmer
College of Chiropractic from 1908 to 1911.
It remained Pacific Chiropractic College until
1932 when it was again renamed. This time, it became Western States College of
Chiropractic and Drugless Physicians. It remained so until 1956 at which time it
became known as Western States Chiropractic College.
