Don's Opinion

by Donald D. Harrison, PhD, DC, MSE

Originator of CBP® Technique

Don Harrison received his B.S. (Mathematics) from the University of Washington in 1968, his M.S. (Mathematics) from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1971, a Secondary Teaching Certificate in education from Western Washington State University in 1973, and his DC degree from Western States Chiropractic College in 1979. He received his M.S.E. (Mechanical Engineering) in 1997 and his Ph.D. (Mathematics) in 1998, both from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He has taught mathematics in junior high, high school, two community colleges in Washington and Oregon, and at Washington State University. He had private practices in Sunnyvale, California and Evanston, Wyoming from 1979-1993. He originated CBP® Technique in 1980 and is the author of two CBP® text books, a CBP® x-ray workbook, and more than 60 articles in peer-reviewed indexed journals.

Recently, Dr. Jason Haas and wife, Dr. Sandy Haas, presented a Case Study at a Subluxation Conference at my request. They were completely astounded by questions and statements from the audience about posture and loss of the sagittal spinal curvatures. It appears that the attendees did not want to accept the fact that abnormal posture and loss of the cervical lordosis fit the definition of subluxation: Bone out of place causing nerve interference. One DC even stated that there are no laws in the universe. What happened to the 4 force/laws: Gravity, EM laws, and the weak and strong nuclear forces?? What happened to the laws in Physiology: Wolff’s Law and Davis’ Law?? What happened to Coulomb’s Law??

I admit that I am somewhat astounded myself. While denying their college education, they ignore logic. With all the literature in the Index Medicus about loads on the tissues in different abnormal postures, about mechanoreceptor function in abnormal postures, about proprioception nerve pathways, and about abnormal mechanical tension in the CNS (Alf Breig, MD’s articles & 3 texts), it became apparent to me that few DCs read the literature.

If one only admitted to the existence of Wolff’s Law (Bone remodels to stress), one would realize that abnormal postures need to be corrected. However at this recent conference, one DC stated, “The body adapts to abnormal posture”. This reminded me of the only time a Harrison was invited to speak at Western Sates Chiropractic College. My brother, Dr. Glenn Harrison, was speaking about abnormal postures as rotations and translations of the head, rib cage, and pelvis in 3-D. One of the attendees made this same statement about adaptation. In the back of the room, Dr. Stonebrink (one of the originators of the DACBO diplomat) spoke up and said, “Yes, the human body adapts to abnormal postural loads, this adaptation is called PATHOLOGY!” Since Dr. Stonebrink said so, the audience quieted and started to listen, but why could they not think through the sequel of events on their own?

Perhaps it is my engineering education that helps me think through the sequence of events in bone: (1) abnormal posture is an abnormal load on the tissues, (2) abnormal loads cause abnormal stresses (force per unit area), (3) abnormal stresses cause abnormal strains (deformations), (4) abnormal deformations cause breaking of hydrogen and covalent bonds, (5) breaking of bonds causes stress generated potentials, (6) these abnormal electrical and magnetic fields influence cells (osteoblasts & osteoclasts) to reform bone in an abnormal way. Thus, the result is pathological bone formation and re-absorption from abnormal posture, which is maintained over time.

I learned this from reading the literature, from engineering classes, and from Guyton’s Physiology. Did you?
